Why Call It BrumGyalieGyalDem?

To clear any confusion of those that don't know the meaning I will break it down for you:

  • Brum meaning 'Birmingham', I also see it as a statement of this is the place of where it all started. After all 'I am a brummie'.

  • "Gyalie is simply a Jamaican term for 'girl'. One of BrumGyalieGyalDems' niches is women or girls, and this is just another way of saying it."

  • "GyalDem" is a Jamaican term that refers to a group of women. I want this business to unite women from all backgrounds and walks of life, evoking a sense of community and togetherness.

The Beginning: Struggles and Self-Discovery

BrumGyalieGyalDem was born from my personal journey of self-discovery and growth. Growing up, I faced many challenges, particularly during the pandemic, when my mental health and self-esteem were at their lowest.

At 14, I struggled with feelings of isolation and not fitting into conventional beauty standards. Determined to change my mindset, I made a conscious decision to focus on my well-being—both mentally and physically.

The Turning Point: Embracing Self-Care

At 15, when I returned to school, I embraced self-care and found joy in looking after my skin, hair, and mind. Slowly, I rebuilt my confidence and realized that beauty wasn’t about fitting into a mould but about feeling good in my own skin.

However, by 16, things became more difficult. I lacked a strong support system, and many people around me were self-absorbed. To protect my mental health, I made the tough but necessary decision to distance myself from certain people.

The Birth of BrumGyalieGyalDem

At 17, during a coach ride home from college in February 2023, the name BrumGyalieGyalDem came to me. “Brum” represents my Birmingham roots, while “GyalieGyalDem” reflects my Caribbean upbringing and the unity of women. I knew I wanted to create something beyond beauty—something rooted in well-being and empowerment.

Taking Action: The First Steps

Determined to bring my vision to life, I created my Instagram page in April 2023 and experimented with making lip glosses and candles, though they didn’t turn out as expected.

At 18, I focused on planning, brainstorming, and refining my vision. However, I faced financial struggles due to poor business decisions and overwhelming expenses. I tried launching a GoFundMe, but it didn’t gain traction, and my mum was the only person who helped me financially. Despite these setbacks, I spent months searching for a job and applying for grants to fund my dream.

Turning Dreams into Reality

By 19, I took tangible steps toward properly launching my business with The King’s Trust, turning years of dreaming into reality. Now, I’m fully committed to building BrumGyalieGyalDem—a brand that helps women embrace their unique beauty and well-being.

Beyond Beauty: A Community of Empowered Women

But this brand is more than just products—it’s about building a community where women can celebrate self-love, self-care, and empowerment. I want BrumGyalieGyalDem to be a space where all women, regardless of background, feel seen, valued, and confident in their own skin.
